Tom Ford: Are the Lips and Boys Worth it?

This isn't really a new question, I mean we pretty much ask ourselves this sort of thing everyday. Do we buy a smaller more manageable amount or do we go for the bulk and hope we eventually make our way through it before we get bored? I remember thinking about this a lot when I was a student. I would be stood in Sainsbury's with a small pack of pasta in my hand wondering if I should splash out on the bigger pack of pasta as it would be better in the long run or do I go for the smaller bag and get myself a drink later with my friends. As you can imagine the smaller bag always ended up coming home with me. Back then I was on a much more limited budget than I am now but I still can't help the habit. This is a question that is very relevant to the beauty community, usually when it comes to miniatures.

If you have read any of my posts before then you might know that I am a sucker for anything mini. As I am a small person (only just 5 foot) I always think smaller products look full size when they are in my hands. Its got to the point where people actually make fun of me when I buy a Venti coffee from Starbucks as it is literally as big as me. One mini product that I have completely fallen for is the Lips and Boys collection by Tom Ford. I have spoken about this range quite a lot over the past few years as I love it. The concept is genius: smaller lipsticks, a smaller price with each lipstick named after influential people in Tom's life. Recently Tom Ford blessed us all with the Boys and Girls Collection so in addition to the 50 boy shades which have be relaunched for the past few years, you can also buy 50 girl shades. If you are lucky you might find your name or a loved ones name on a lipstick. Even though I have nothing but love for the range, one thing I have always wondered is if they are truly worth the money. Yes they are cheaper but are they that much cheaper for the amount you get? As the new collection has come out I thought I would actual consider it for a moment and share with you my thought on whether or not you should just take the plunge and treat yourself to a full size. Although you do need to bare in mind my earlier confession that I was dumb enough to buy a small pack of pasta just so I could drink in the evenings so our opinions could differ but lets focus on the facts.

Let's get down to the prices, why not start off at the deep end. These are Tom Ford lipsticks so they are never going to be cheap. That is part of the appeal of the brand. The standard Tom Ford lipstick is going to set you back a whopping £40! I mean it is an unholy amount for a lipstick and I'm not sure it is fully justified but there is nothing like the feeling you get when you use the lipstick. The Boys and Girls collection stand at £29 each which seems quite a bit cheaper however the difference in price only matters if you are on a tight budget. If you can't afford a large lipstick and you want a Tom Ford lipstick you would have to go for one of the Girls and Boys.

Another massive consideration as to whether or not they are worth it, is the amount of product they hold for the price. When you hold a full size lipstick next to the mini version, yes there does seem quite a size different but there isn't a massive difference in the amount of product they hold. The full size lipstick is 3g in comparison to the Girls and Boys which hold 2g. To even it out and make a better comparison, if you bought 10g of either lipstick: the Girls and Boys would be £145.00 and the full size is £133.33 so in the long run the full size is around £12 cheaper. That is if you buy tube after tube, personally it is rare that I would repurchase a lipstick as there are so many on the market so it is only worth going for the larger if you know you love the shade enough to keep buying it.

I know I have been talking about this as if the Boys and Girl range has corresponding shades so you could easily pick a smaller or a larger size which isn't always the case but some of shade are very similar! For example Flame which is one of my all time favourite Tom Ford lipstick shades, is very similar to Christiano which is one of the Lips and Boys. This means if you are lucky you will be able to find a lipstick within the now 100 shade large Boys and Girls range and not have to buy the full size one. I will admit the shade range from the full size collection is slightly better and there are more matte finishes which is my preferred finish but if there is one similar in the Boys and Girls I would just go for that one.

I did mention briefly the feeling of using a Tom Ford lipstick and I do have to say you get that with both of these. Usually with a mini product there is a alternative packaging used so it has a similar vibe but essentially is not the same. With these lipsticks the packaging is identical, one has just been made smaller. The same magic that is placed in your standard Tom Ford lipstick is replicated within these little mini versions. I know I keep referring to the Girls and Boys as minis but please don't get me wrong, they have the same amazing formula as the normal lipsticks and the quality of the product is not diminished in the slightest. I think there is a tenancy to think that brands don't put the same effort into smaller products but for a high end brand like Tom Ford they cannot get away with doing it as it would tarnish the brand. Plus this isn't really a mini range, it is a range in its own right so they have spent time creating them rather than making them smaller.

Personally having had both, I prefer the Girls and Boys, in terms of the amount you get for the price I think it makes more sense to get one of the smaller lipsticks. Plus you might actually use up a whole lipstick. Unlike normal lipsticks which I hardly ever finish; I've managed to make my way through almost 3 of my Lips and Boys which I think is an achievement in itself. Also it shows just how much I actually like Tom Ford lipsticks as I must use them quite a lot to use up even a mini one. I guess another question I should be considering is if Tom Ford lipsticks are worth it as a whole but I already know the answer to this and I would say yes. If you like a colour and you can afford it, why not. They are beautiful lipsticks, the formula is always incredible and I love the luxury feeling of applying them. If a Tom Ford lipstick is not in your price range then simply put no, nothing is going to be worth spending your money on other than things that matter. These are luxury lipsticks and therefore are 100% not a necessity but if you are in the market for a treat these are stunning lipsticks and they most certainly feel like a treat even down to the packaging.
